I often describe myself as a functional generalist and early stage specialist. I love to work with smart people to put something new (and hopefully important) into the world.

I am currently the VP of Product at Axial, a network for connecting medium-sized businesses with capital providers and buyers. Prior to Axial, I was CEO of Neo, a product innovation consulting firm that was acquired by Pivotal. At Neo, I have worked with the Mayo Clinic, Time Inc, American Express and many others to help them test and build innovation programs or new digital business lines.
My ecclectic background covers multiple software and Internet startups, and includes dalliances in the art world and doing technology M&A investment banking.
I wrote Talking to Humans, with the help of NYU’s Frank Rimalovski. Talking to Humans is a practical guide to customer development has been read by over 20,000 people and is core reading for entrepreneurship classes at Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, NYU and many others. I also write and speak a lot on product management. Popular pieces include a guide to good product management and what was probably the first writeup of “lean product management.”
I’m a maker at heart, and usually have some sort of side project going where I can keep my hands dirty. Right now it is Jotto.
I was named “Product Person of the Year” for 2010 by NYC’s The Product Group meetup. I also built NYC’s lean startup meetup to almost 5,000 people over 5 years.
Most of my blog covers startup, product management, and design topics.
I also have a food blog at The Constable’s Larder. One of these days, I’ll have to start painting seriously again.
